A little about Marco. Brian and I had been starting to think about another family member to bring in. When Princess left us there was a very big hole in our household and in our hearts.
I started looking at shelters and rescues. When this picture came on our screen it was set. Marco had gone to the Lonestar Animal Sanctuary in Midland, Texas back in January, 2025.

They took him from a shelter in Odessa that told them he was going to be put down in about an hour. They said he was uncontrollable and would not make a good rescue dog. They hauled butt over to the kill shelter to beat the clock that was ticking. Upon arrival he was in severe kennel stress. Thrashing side to side in the metal box kennel.
We were told he does not show well because he barks like an attack animal when anyone comes near him. So I suggested taking him into the office and let loose in a visitation room. We walked in and sat down. Marco was brought in after a few minute interview with us and the staff.
Marco came in running! He has 2 modes Run and sit. He jumped into my lap and back down like a Nascar wall. He back tracked and realized there were 2 new people in the room. He would go up to Brian and sniff then the same to me. We visited for about 45 min and he finally came to get a treat from me.
The ladies at the rescue said he had not done that with anyone. It was meant to be! Marco was coming home with us!

We stopped at Tractor Supply to buy some of the food he was on at the rescue. Picked up a few toys. On top of the ones we bought as bribe toys before going to visit him. He did well walking in on his lead. When we left, the party in the car began.

I had him in the new car that we had picked up about an hour before going to see him. (Thank God for leather seats) Brian following us in the “Beast”. About 10 min into the ride he started throwing up. Got pulled over into a large parking lot and worked on clean up.
20 min down the road and he was shaking so hard he was throwing up again. In the 50 minutes we had left to get home, he had thrown up 3 more times. Seriously, what else could he have in there?
My thoughts when we finally got home was “OMG! We travel for work. How is this going to work out?” Brian said call the vet and ask about dehydration. Should we give child electrolyte water? The vet said no just offer plenty of fresh water. He drank and snapped right out of it. Ready to play!
Over the next few weeks I took him on rides to the store/laundry/work and used some over the counter calming chews. Those worked unless it was anything over 30 minutes. So to the vet we went for a check up and she gave him some trazadone pills. Those worked like a charm! Now Marco only has to hear lets go and he’s racing us to the car!
It has now been almost 3 months with this awesome boy! I want to thank Lonestar Animal Sanctuary in Midland, TX for taking this good boy in. We are still working on social skills. We do not know what his previous 2 1/2 years experiences were. He does not trust easily. He is not aggressive but will shy away and look mean. That makes me sad because he is so full of cuddles, loves and kisses! We will get there!
There is so much more to share of Marco’s new adventures. I will be working on those in upcoming blogs. Please defiantly stay tuned for his Cactus/Lizard adventure. It will be side splitting.
