From Childhood to Canine Companion: The Enduring Tale of My Nickname ‘Oscar’

What’s the story behind your nickname?

(James Maddocks 1980-something)

My dad gave me my nickname as child. I have no idea when it even started. One of my earliest memories of him calling me by my nickname was when I was a teen.

I would hear him say “Oscar, have you cleaned your room?” I will assume he took the name from Sesame Street. My room was never a crazy mess though. So maybe it was being the normal teenage grouch? He always said it with a loving smile though.

I would give anything to hear my dad say “hey Oscar” again!

When we adopted a senior dog from the pound, we were having a drink on the patio discussing what we should name him. Adopting from the pound he didn’t come with a name. Just a kennel number. We started calling out names and nothing seemed to stick. Then Brian looked at me with a big smile and told me there was only one name for this dog that would fit. What my dad used to call me. I said “Oscar?” I swear my life on it that as soon as I said it this senior dog started barking his fool head off and jumping up n down!! So with lots of love we named him Oscar.

Thanks dad for bringing Oscar back into my life so many years later. Oscar has now since passed. He did live to about 16 years old and was for sure mommas boy.

That’s how I got my nickname and how it got passed on.
